Manchester Monarchs News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Manchester Monarchs fell short against the Binghamton Senators, 4-1, at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena snapping the Monarchs six-game win-streak on Friday night.
Manchester (12-10-0-1) ranks second in the Atlantic Division with 25 points. Binghamton (8-12-1-1) is in fifth place in the East Division with 18 points.
"Tonight, we made some errors in the first period which proved too costly to overcome," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "Our energy was high and we worked hard, but (Robin) Lehner made save after save. We didn't score. At some point, we need to produce with more regularity. It's important our focus and preparation is in place from the get-go. We need to bounce back and have everyone ready to compete at the drop of the puck against Providence and Worcester. We need all hands on deck for 60 minutes."
Left wing Mike Hoffman made the score 2-0 on the power play for the Senators at 8:36 of the opening period. Senators center Stephane Da Costa sent a pass to Hoffman who was cutting to the middle of the ice from the left wing boards. Hoffman picked up speed down the center of the Monarchs zone and split the Monarchs defenders. Near the right hash mark, he wristed a shot into the top left corner of the net for the eventual game-winning goal for his fifth tally of the season.
The Senators opened the scoring at 1:46 of the first period off the stick of right wing Andre Petersson. Da Costa carried the puck to center ice before passing it to Petersson along the left wing boards. Petersson gained the Monarchs zone with momentum and took the puck to the net. Putting the Senators on the scoreboard, Petersson flipped a shot under Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff's glove from the left slot. The right wing's fifth goal of the season was also assisted by left wing Corey Cowick.
The Senators scored their third goal of the first period when right wing Mike Bartlett scored his first tally of the season. With the Senators on the power play, defenseman Josh Godfrey passed the puck from the right point to defenseman Mark Borowiecki at the left point. Borowiecki released a slap shot that was tipped by Bartlett at 10:55 of the first period.
The Monarchs tallied their lone goal of the game when defenseman Patrick Mullen wristed the puck past Senators netminder Robin Lehner. Right wing Brandon Kozun gained the Senators zone before releasing a wrist shot from the top of the right wing face-off circle. Kozun's shot produced a rebound in front of Lehner. Mullen corralled the loose puck and found the back of the net at 19:04 of the first period. Left wing Dwight King also tallied an assist on Mullen's second goal of the season.
The Senators added an empty net goal at 18:37 of the third period when defenseman Eric Bryba wristed a shot from the left face-off dot in the Senators defensive zone. Center Pat Cannone assisted on Bryba's second goal of the season.
Zatkoff (5-3-1) took his third loss of the season stopping 22-of-25 shots. Lehner (5-8-1) earned his fifth win of the season making 27 saves on 28 shots.
Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Binghamton was 2-for-4 with the man advantage.
