Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - After falling behind early in the contest, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins rattled off four unanswered goals to defeat the Portland Pirates, 4-1, on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Defensemen Alex Grant and Alexandre Picard each recorded two assists in the Penguins' first home victory since November 15 against Binghamton.
Despite dominating the pace of the play in the early minutes of the game, the Penguins fell behind, 1-0, at 3:27as Brett MacLean snuck a wrist shot past Brad Thiessen.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would finally break through at 11:23 of the same period when Jason Williams had his initial shot blocked by the Portland defense, but sent a second bid back toward the net that Ben Street redirected into the top right corner.
Using a 5-on-4 advantage, the Penguins took their first lead of the match with 3:57 left in the first period. With Ryan Craig setting a screen in front of Portland goalie Curtis McElhinney, Joey Mormina fired his third goal of the season inside the left post.
Holding a 2-1 edge for most of the second period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton pushed its lead two with another power play tally. Alex Grant held in a clearing attempt at the Portland blueline and flung a shot that McElhinney stopped with the pad, but Eric Tangradi was able to dump in the rebound.
Geoff Walker added an empty net goal with 6.4 seconds remaining in regulation to complete the scoring.
Thiessen made 19 saves to record his tenth win of the season. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went 2-for-5 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins head to Syracuse on Saturday, December 3 to skate against the Crunch at 7:30 PM. For more information, call the Penguins at (570) 208-PENS or visit www.wbspenguins.com.
