Pirates Iced by Penguins

December 2, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania - Alex Grant notched a pair of assists and Ben Street extended his point streak to four games on a goal as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Portland Pirates by a count of 4-1 this evening in front of 7,143 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Mormina, Tangradi, and Walker also found the back of the net for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as the Penguins improved to 12-6-1-4 overall and 3-4-1-2 at home.

Brett MacLean netted the lone tally for Portland, his second in as many games, as the Pirates dropped to 10-8-1-1 on the season, and ended their point streak at seven games (6-0-1-0).

The visitors got off to a quick start with MacLean's third tally of the season just over three minutes into the game on a wrist shot from the left circle that beat Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender Brad Thiessen to his high glove side. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would provide an answer at the 11:23 mark when Street tipped a Jason Williams pass by Portland goaltender Curtis McElhinney, and under four minutes later on a Mormina power-play blast from the point, to give the hosts a one-goal lead heading into the second period. Tangradi knocked in the second Wilkes-Barre/Scranton power-play goal of the night on a rebound off an Alex Grant shot with under four minutes remaining for the only score of the middle stanza. Walker sealed the game for the Penguins on an empty-net goal with 6.4 seconds remaining, his fourth of the season.

The Penguins out-shot the Pirates 35-20 as Thiessen improved to 10-5-2 on the season. McElhinney stopped 31 shots while dropping to 6-8-0.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were all from the Penguins: 1. Mormina; 2. Grant; 3. Street.
