August 28, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Altoona Curve second baseman Max Moroff has been selected to the 2015 Eastern League All-Star Team, the league announced on Friday, as voted on by league managers and media.
Moroff was the league's selection at second base, joining the end-of-season All-Star team that features the top players at each position.
Playing in his fourth professional season, Moroff has compiled a breakout campaign in 2015. He has posted a .298 batting average through Thursday, the eighth-highest in the league. He also ranks among the league leaders in games played (126, T-1st), runs scored (75, 1st), hits (144, 2nd), total bases (199, 2nd), walks (65, 3rd) and on-base percentage (.378, 5th).
The infielder also has the highest fielding percentage (.978) among qualifying second basemen, committing just twelve errors at the position. He leads all Eastern League second basemen in putouts (212), assists (320) and double plays (73).
With 144 hits this year, Moroff has set a new record for the most in a single season by a switch-hitter in Curve franchise history, passing the mark originally set by Shawn Garrett at 142 in 2002.
From April 10th-May 15th, Moroff went on a 30-game on-base streak, the longest by any player in the Eastern League this season. He has also posted 11- and 12-game hitting streaks this year.
Moroff is a native of Maitland, Fla. and was selected in the 16th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of Trinity Prep School. He currently sits third on the Curve with seven home runs and tied for third with 47 RBIs. He leads the team in doubles (24) and stolen bases (16).
Other selections to the Eastern League All-Star Team included catcher Pedro Severino (Harrisburg), first baseman Brock Stassi (Reading), third baseman Yandy Diaz (Akron), shortstop Gavin Checchini (Binghamton), outfielders Wynton Bernard (Erie), Quincy Latimore (Bowie) and Mike Tauchman (New Britain), utility player Josh Rodriguez (Binghamton), designated hitter Dean Green (Erie), right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer (Binghamton/Erie), left-handed pitcher Richard Bleier (Harrisburg) and relief pitcher Stephen Shackleford (Reading).
The Curve continue their final home stand of the regular season tonight against the Trenton Thunder at 7 p.m. with gates opening at 6. The first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive a Jordy Mercer "Lloyd Christmas" bobblehead, courtesy of Dave Stombaugh, C.P.A. The Curve wrap up their regular-season home schedule with back-to-back postgame fireworks shows on Saturday and Sunday night with first pitch times set for 6 p.m.
