Former AL MVP & NL Batting Champion Justin Morneau to Join Rock Cats

New Britain, CT- The New Britain Rock Cats Baseball Club, the Double-A Eastern League Affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, has announced that former American League Most Valuable Player and National League Batting Champion Justin Morneau was assigned to the Rock Cats on a Major League rehab assignment. He is expected to play in the final three games at New Britain Stadium, tonight (Friday, August 28) through Sunday against the Portland Sea Dogs. Morneau, who played for the Rock Cats from 2001-2003, will be the final ever Major League rehab assignment to appear at New Britain Stadium.

Morneau, 34, won his first career batting title last season and led the National League with a .319 batting average in his first year with the Colorado Rockies. He was the named the 2006 American League Most Valuable when he batted .321 with 37 doubles, 34 home runs and 130 RBI for the Minnesota Twins. Morneau was selected to four consecutive All-Star teams (2007-2010) and won the 2008 Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium.

The New Westminster, BC, Canada native played for the Rock Cats for parts of three seasons and helped the Rock Cats to the Eastern League Co-Championship in 2001. In 2002, he batted .298 with 31 doubles, 16 home runs and 80 RBI at New Britain and was selected to play in the Major League Future's Game at Miller Park in Milwaukee. He began the 2003 season with the Rock Cats before eventually reaching the Major League's that same season.
