Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Chad Kuhl earned his eleventh win and Andy Vasquez homered for the third time this week as the Altoona Curve defeated the Trenton Thunder, 3-2, on Friday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
The Curve (70-62) scored two of their three runs in the second inning in the win over the Thunder (68-63).
Kuhl (Win, 11-5) allowed two runs on four hits over six innings while walking two and striking out one. It was his 15th quality start of the season, the most of any pitcher this year for the Curve. Over his last ten starts, Kuhl is 6-1 with a 1.38 ERA.
With two runs in the sixth inning against Kuhl, his scoreless streak was snapped at 23.1 innings, just two shy of the Curve franchise record (Derek Hankins, 24.0 in 2010). It tied the season-best mark for a Curve pitcher, originally set by Zack Dodson to open the year.
Vasquez connected on a two-run homer in the second against Thunder starter Jaron Long (Loss, 3-6), his second in two nights, to put the Curve ahead 2-0.
Jacob Stallings extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth with an RBI single.
The Thunder cut the deficit to one in the sixth inning. Rob Segedin's sacrifice fly ended Kuhl's streak and Tyler Austin's two-out RBI double closed the gap to 3-2.
Reliever Tom Harlan (Hold, 11) pitched two scoreless innings and finished the night with two strikeouts. Jhondaniel Median (Save, 9) worked around a hit to post a scoreless ninth.
The Curve and the Thunder play the third of the four-game set on Saturday night at PNG Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Right-hander Matt Benedict (5-6, 6.15) will start for the Curve. Righty Eric Ruth (8-4, 3.04) will pitch for the Thunder.
The game will be followed by a Fireworks show. We have partnered up with the Griffith Family Foundation and the Good Funeral Home on a memorabilia auction to raise funds for pancreatic cancer research.
