Portland, ME -- The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that Binghamton Mets shortstop Gavin Cecchini has been selected as the 2015 Eastern League Rookie of the Year. The 21-year old actually made his Eastern League debut in the final game of the 2014 regular season for the B-Mets and went on to appear in three playoff games during their championship run. Cecchini returned to Binghamton for the start of the 2015 season and is hitting .317 (139-for-439) with 26 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 64 runs scored, 51 RBIs, three stolen bases, a .442 slugging percentage and a .377 on-base percentage in 109 games. He had a career-high five hits in an 11-3 win over Richmond on July 30th and he has also collected four hits in a game six other times this season, including recording three four-hit performances during an 11-game stretch from July 10th-July 22nd. Gavin, who is a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana, is currently ranked among the league leaders in batting average (.317-2nd), hits (139-tied 3rd), doubles (26-tied 4th), OPS (.819-5th), total bases (194-6th), on-base percentage (.377-6th), runs scored (64-tied 7th), slugging percentage (.442-7th) and extra-base hits (37-tied 8th).
The 6'2", 200 lb. slugger was especially impressive during the month of July when he was named the Eastern League Player of the Month after hitting .387 (48-for-124) with six doubles, three triples, two home runs, 21 runs scored and 18 RBIs in 29 games during the month. He was also named the shortstop on the recently announced Eastern League All-Star Team and was a member of the Eastern Division roster for the 2015 Eastern League All-Star Game in Portland, going 0-for-1 with a walk in the game.
Gavin, who is currently rated by MLB.com as the fifth best prospect in the New York Mets organization, was selected by the New York Mets with the 12th overall pick in the first round of the 2012 draft out of Barbe High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
