Monsters Cap Perfect Three-In-Three with 5-2 Win over Griffins
March 26, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - In the 11th of 12 meetings between the two teams this season, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters capped a grueling three-in-three weekend with the team's third consecutive victory, a 5-2 triumph over the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, MI. With the win, the Monsters improved to 37-21-5-5 overall this season and with a .618 points percentage, remain alone in fourth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Monsters grabbed a 1-0 lead at 12:03 of the first period on Saturday when Daniel Zaar scalded home a power-play one-timer from the left circle on feeds from Steve Eminger and Markus Hannikainen. Just over one minute later, Lake Erie's advantage bulged to 2-0 at 13:04 when Sonny Milano deflected a pass from T.J. Tynan, set up by John Ramage, over the right pad of Griffins net-minder Jared Coreau at even-strength.
In the middle frame, Lukas Sedlak extended the league's longest active goal streak to five games with a five-on-five marker 48 seconds in on feeds from Josh Anderson and Tynan, before Milano buried his second of the game on the power-play at 2:05 thanks to helpers from Jaime Sifers and Ramage. Eric Tangradi and the Griffins spoiled Lake Erie goaltender Brad Thiessen's shutout bid at 15:31 of the second and added a Ryan Sproul power-play tally at 16:14 of the third to make it 4-2 before Sifers buried a lengthy empty-net score, assisted by Trent Vogelhuber, at 18:35 of the final period to establish the Monsters' 5-2 final margin of victory.
Coreau took the loss after surrendering four goals on 12 shots faced in net for Grand Rapids before being pulled in favor of Tom McCollum early in the middle stanza, who went on to stop each of the 14 pucks he faced the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Thiessen improved to 11-4-4 on the year for Lake Erie by virtue of a 36-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Friday road clash vs. the Chicago Wolves with full coverage, live from Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL, at 8:00 pm on ESPN 850 WKNR and the Monsters Hockey Network.
