Bears Defeat Devils in Shootout

March 26, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

HERSHEY, Pa. - Dan Ellis made 26 saves in the first 65 minutes and four of five in the ensuing shootout, helping the Hershey Bears sweep their week of games in a 3-2 victory on Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 10,352 at GIANT Center.

The Bears would strike first, breaking out of their own end with a four-on-two rush. After several short passes, Travis Boyd tapped a Jakub Vrana feed behind a helpless Ken Appleby at 9:30.

Albany evened the score at 2:14 of the second, when Corbin McPherson's slap shot from the right wing deflected over the shoulder of Ellis.

Another beautiful passing play would earn Hershey the lead again. From the trapezoid behind the Albany net, Chandler Stephenson backhanded a pass diagonally toward the bottom of the left circle. Riley Barber was there to one-time a sharp-angle shot into the net at 8:36 for the rookie's 20th goal of the season.

But just 28 seconds later, former Bears forward Jim O'Brien would set up in the low slot and angle a perfect deflection of Reece Scarlett's shot from the point inside the left post to tie the contest.

Both Ellis and Appleby denied six third-period shots, and an exciting overtime followed, which featured Hershey outshooting Albany 6-3 and each team finding the goal post once.

Vrana scored in the second round and Barber in the fifth, while Ellis stopped all but Brian O'Neill's third-round chance - of which he got a small piece - to push the Bears to victory.
