B-Sens Upended by Comets

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators fell to the Utica Comets 5-1 on home ice.

Kellen Jones tallied his third goal of the year 8:29 into the opening period giving the visiting Utica Comets a 1-0 lead and tying them with the Toronto Marlies for a league-leading 13th shorthanded goal of the season. The B-Sens managed to outshoot the Comets 13-8 over the opening 20 minutes, but they went into the first intermission down a goal.

The visitors added three goals over the middle frame to increase their lead to 4-0. Ronalds Kenins blasted home his fourth tally of the year less than two minutes into the period to make it 2-0. Curtis Valk grabbed his first American Hockey League goal just over eight minutes into the stanza before T.J. Hensick pushed home a loose rebound with less than seven minutes to play to make it a four-goal contest going into the final intermission break.

Chris Driedger entered the game for the final 20 minutes in relief of starting goaltender Matt O'Connor. Jon Landry extended Utica's lead to five goals before David Dziurzynski ended Joe Cannata's shutout bid less than four minutes into the final frame. The Comets held the 5-1 lead to finish the game despite the B-Sens outshooting Utica 14-6 in the third period.

Cannata finished with 35 saves to earn the win, while Driedger stopped five of six shots faced with O'Connor being dealt the loss after 15 saves.

The B-Sens are back on home ice Friday, April 1, to face the Albany Devils before they host the Utica Comets on Saturday with both games set to start at 7:05p.m. Fans can purchase tickets by calling the B-Sens Executive Office Monday to Thursday from 9:00a.m. - 5:30p.m. or Friday and Saturday from 8:00a.m. - the game's second intermission.
