Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's Winning Streak Ends with 5-0 Loss to Providence

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins successfully kept the league's No. 1 power play off the board yet again, but still dropped a 5-0 decision to the Providence Bruins on Saturday night at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

The Penguins' penalty kill neutralized all five of the Bruins' power plays over the course of the game, making them a perfect 25-for-25 against a Providence team that has stood atop the special teams standings for most of the 2015-16 season.

At even strength, Providence's line of Max Talbot, Seth Griffith and Brian Ferlin proved to be a tour de force in the first period, as the line combined for three goals in the opening frame, giving Providence a 3-0 lead by the first intermission.

A pretty passing play set up Griffith on the back door for the game's first goal at 9:37 of the first, and he cashed in again 2:17 later.

Talbot, in his return to Mohegan Sun Arena since his last game with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Oct. 21, 2006, kicked a puck from his skate to his stick in the high slot and blasted a slap shot into the net for his third point of the game with 3:50 left in opening frame.

The Penguins began the second period down 3-0 to the Bruins and on a five-on-three penalty kill, but denied Providence any chances, successfully stifling the league's top-ranked man advantage.

A Colin Miller point shot navigated its way through traffic and behind Tristan Jarry, giving the Bruins a 4-0 lead at 13:38 of the second.

Talbot scored yet again, completing a four point night (2G-2A), at 5:51 of the third and final frame, lifting Providence to a 5-0 lead.

The Bruins went on yet another two-man advantage, only to be denied once again by the Penguins' stout penalty killing efforts.

A late-game charge by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton saw plenty of shots generated, but no goals as Jeremy Smith denied all 32 pucks shot his way for his first shutout of the season.

Jarry finished the game with 29 saves on 34 shots while manning the crease for the home team.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton gets a shot at redemption against the Springfield Falcons on Tuesday, Mar. 29 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The Penguins are 8-1-0-0 over the past two seasons against the Falcons. Puck drop between Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Springfield is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
