Manchester Monarchs News Release

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Former Los Angeles Kings left wing Jon Sim scored the lone goal as the Philadelphia Phantoms shut out the Manchester Monarchs, 1-0, in front of a crowd of 4,954 at the Wachovia Spectrum on Friday night. The Monarchs, now 21-4-1-1 with 44 points on the season, remain the number one team in the American Hockey League with a one-point lead over the Phantoms, who are 21-5-0-1 with 43 points overall.

The only goal in the game came just 1:56 into the first period when Sim was able to shovel the puck past Monarchs goaltender Mathieu Garon as bodies were piling up in front of the net. Center R.J. Umberger and left wing Tony Voce assisted on Sim's ninth goal of the season.

Manchester left wingers Petr Kanko and Dustin Brown had a short-handed breakaway at the one-minute mark of the third period, which was the Monarchs best opportunity to tie the game. Phantoms goaltender Antero Niittymaki robbed the Monarchs as he made the save on Kanko's wrister from the slot.

Garon (14-4-1) made 21 saves in the game and took his fourth loss of the season. Niittymaki (14-5-0) earned his 14th win and second shutout by stopping all 24 Monarchs shots.
