Monarchs Drop Shootout to Royals, 5-4

READING, Pa. - The Manchester Monarchs fell to the Reading Royals Friday night, 5-4, in a shootout at Santander Arena.
The Monarchs (40-22-3-3) couldn't grab the extra point against the Royals (37-23-8-0) and lost, 5-4, in a shootout.
The Monarchs took the early lead at 3:44 of the first period on the 19th goal of the season by Michael Doherty. David Kolomatis took a shot from the right point, where the rebound bounced into the slot to Doherty, who wristed a shot past the dive of Reading goaltender, John Muse, to make the score, 1-0.
Manchester extended their lead at 12:52 of the first period on the 34th goal of the season by Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman. Matt Marcinew collected the puck at the bottom of the left circle, where he sent a pass to Rob Hamilton at the middle of the blue line. Hamilton took a wrist shot that was deflected in front by LaVallee-Smotherman, over the glove of Muse, to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
The Monarchs added to their lead at 16:53 of the first period on the 11th goal of the season by Kevin Morris. Matt Schmalz raced to a puck behind the Reading net and fed a backhanded pass into the slot, where Ashton Rome tipped the puck to Morris, who gathered the puck on his backhand and lifted it over the shoulder of Muse, to make the score, 3-0.
The Royals got on the board at 3:26 of the second period on the 14th goal of the season by Ryan Penny. Adam Schmidt sent a pass from the right hashmark to the left point, where Nick Neville sent a pass to Penny sitting at the left post, tapping the puck past Monarchs goaltender, Charles Williams, to make the score, 3-1.
Just :17 seconds later, Reading added another goal, at 3:43 of the second period on the 21st goal of the season by Chris McCarthy. Matias Cleland sent a pass out of his defensive zone to McCarthy streaking up the right wing on a 2-on-2, where he got to the top of the right circle and ripped a shot over the blocker of Williams to make the score, 3-2.
Reading tied things up at 17:24 of the second period on the 30th goal of the season by Matt Willows. McCarthy received a pass from Matt Wilkins in the left circle and sent a pass to the right post, where Willows redirected the puck past the glove of Williams to tie the game, 3-3.
Manchester took the lead on the power play at 9:40 of the third period on the 12th goal of the season by Marcinew. Jayce Hawryluk held the puck at the top of the right circle, before firing a pass over to Marcinew, who one-timed a shot in the left circle, over the glove of Muse, to give the Monarchs a 4-3 lead.
Reading tied the game at 17:44 of the third period on the 2nd goal of the game and 15th of the season by Penny. Steven Swavely brought the puck from behind the net to the bottom of the right circle and took a shot towards goal. The rebound landed in the crease, where Penny smacked it into the net, to tie the game, 4-4.
Reading took the extra point in the shootout, with Michael Huntebrinker scoring the only goal, to claim the 5-4 win and clinch a playoff berth for the Royals.
The Monarchs are back in action Saturday, Mar. 31 (7:05 p.m.) when they take on the Wheeling Nailers from WesBanco Arena.
NOTES:
Charles Williams made 25 saves on 29 shots.
Reading won the shootout, 1-0.
Matt Willows scored his 200th career point.
