Ratelle Buries OT Winner in Eagles 3-2 Win over Allen
March 30, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Colorado Eagles News Release
ALLEN, TX. - Eagles forward Joey Ratelle scored the game-winning goal just 1:03 into overtime as Colorado defeated the Allen Americans 3-2 on Friday. Goaltender Joe Cannata collected his 20th win of the season in net, stopping 21 of the 23 shots thrown his way. Defenseman Matt Register posted a goal and an assist in the winning effort, as the Eagles picked up their eighth win in the last nine games.
Register would put Colorado on the board 8:20 into the contest when he fired a shot from the blue line through traffic and into the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Register's 15th of the season and also pushed the veteran defenseman to 60 points on the year.
Allen would pull even early in the second period when forward Thomas Frazee beat Cannata with a shot from the left circle to tie the game at 1-1 just 3:25 into the middle frame.
Colorado would reclaim the lead less than seven minutes later when defenseman Chase Norrish stepped into a slap shot from the top of the right circle, lighting the lamp and putting the Eagles back on top, 2-1 at the 10:20 mark of the second period. The goal was Norrish's first as a professional, after joining Colorado as an amateur earlier in the month.
The Americans would again strike early in a period, as a shorthanded rush by Allen would lead to a rebound on the side of the cage that Frazee would sweep into the back of the net at the 4:36 mark of the third period to tie the game at 2-2.
Three periods would not be enough to decide a winner, so the two teams would head to sudden-death overtime tied at 2-2. Just over a minute into the extra session, Ratelle would race down the right wing, slipping past a defender before beating Allen goalie Jake Paterson with a wrister to give Colorado the 3-2 win.
Colorado finished 0-for-2 on the power play, while also holding the Americans 0-for-1 on the man-advantage.
The Eagles return to action when they take on the Allen Americans at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas on Saturday, March 31st at 6:20pm MT.
