Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves (20-20) snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Hartford Yard Goats (24-20) on Monday night at Dunkin' Donuts Park.
The SeaWolves snapped a streak of 19 consecutive scoreless innings in the top of the third against Yard Goats starter Brandon Gold. Isaac Paredes reached on his second infield single of the game with two outs bringing Josh Lester to the plate. Lester blasted his third home run of the season, putting the SeaWolves ahead 2-0.
Erie extended the lead in the top of the fifth. Luke Burch led off with a single to extend his hitting streak to four straight games and Sergio Alcantara reached on an error. Derek Hill attempted to bunt the runners up but on the play, the Goats retired the lead runner Burch at third. Paredes followed with a base hit to left, loading the bases for Lester. Lester lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Alcantara for a 3-0 lead. Jose Azocar then singled home Hill for a 4-0 lead.
SeaWolves starter Casey Mize was on point once again. He allowed a lead off walk in the first before retiring the side in order. In the second, Mize allowed a pair of hits to put runners on the corners with one out before retiring the final two of the innings to keep the Goats off the scoreboard. He would go on to hurl six scoreless frames and finished his outing by retiring the last seven batters he faced.
Erie reliever Drew Carlton gave up a leadoff triple to start the seventh, but would go on to retire the next six batters he faced and struck out four. The four punchouts equaled Carlton's season-high.
The lone Yard Goats run came in the bottom of the ninth when Vince Fernandez homered with two outs off of reliever Bryan Garcia.
Mize (3-0) earned the win twirling six scoreless, allowing three hits with a walk and six strikeouts. It was the third Double-A start in which Mize did not allow an earned run.
Gold (4-3) took the loss allowing four runs on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts in six innings.
The SeaWolves will look for the series win in the middle game of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Matt Manning (3-2, 2.47 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against LHP Ty Culbrreth (3-2, 4.14 ERA).
