Great Lakes Loons News Release
Mitch Moreland, a 2008 Midwest League all-star, made a triumphant return to Dow Diamond Wednesday night. In his first game back at the ballpark following this year's Midsummer Classic, Moreland clubbed a three-run home run in the eighth inning to erase a two-run deficit and lead the Clinton LumberKings to a 4-3 win over the Great Lakes Loons.
The game was played in front of a festive crowd of 4,918 on F.P. Horak's Poster Giveaway Night.
Moreland's blast came in the eighth off reliever Garrett White (1-1). He started the All-Star Game, powered by Dow Corning, for the Western Division. White hurled two scoreless innings in the sixth and seventh, but surrendered singles to Matt Lawson and Tim Smith before surrendering blast on the first pitch to Moreland.
Given Kutz started for the Loons and pitched well in five innings, allowing a run and three hits, striking out five.
The Loons took a 2-0 lead in the second on an RBI double by Brandon Taylor and a run-producing single by Francisco Lizarraga. Both runs were unearned following an error by shortstop Davis Stoneburner.
Following an RBI single by Jonathan Greene in the fourth, the Loons responded in the bottom half of the fourth with a single by Jovanny Rosario to give the Loons' a 3-1 lead.
The Loons (12-20 second half, 42-59 overall) continue their series against Clinton Thursday night beginning at 7:05pm. Left-hander Thomas Melgarejo, who has allowed just two earned runs in his last three starts (1.02 ERA) will start for the Loons (2-4, 3.52 ERA overall). Lefty Michael Kirkman (3-0, 3.06) is scheduled to start for the LumberKings. Thursday in â50s Night, featuring a special appearance by Jerry Mathers, who played Beaver in the hit â50s television show Leave it to Beaver.
The Great Lakes Loons are the second-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
