Rattlers fall to White Caps

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Mauricio Robles pitched six shutout innings to lead the West Michigan Whitecaps to a 6-1 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattler Wednesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark. The lefty allowed two hits and was backed up by a 10-hit Whitecap attack.

West Michigan (15-16 second half, 52-47 overall) scored three times off Rattler starting pitcher Keith Renaud in the bottom of the second. Cody Middleton's RBI double started the scoring. A sacrifice fly by Kyle Peter and an RBI single bu Justin Henry concluded the scoring in the frame.

The Whitecaps added to their lead in the fifth inning. Brandon Douglas singled in a run for a 4-0 advantage. Two more West Michigan runs crossed the plate in the sixth inning. A wild pitch by reliever Natividad Dilone allowed the first run to score. Peter's infield single knocked in another run and the Whitecaps went up 6-0.

Robles left after six solid innings in which he struck out four and walked two.

Wisconsin (7-24, 38-59) avoided the shutout in the ninth inning. Joe Dunigan collected his second hit of the night with a two-out, RBI single. The Rattlers would load the bases with two walks against Noah Krol, but would not get another run.

Dunigan had tow of the Rattlers four hits in the game. Alex Meneses had the other two.

Game two of the series is set to got on Thursday night. Michael Pineda (5-5, 2.16) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Alfredo Figaro (12-2, 1.83) is the scheduled starter for the Whitecaps. Figaro leads the Midwest League in wins and ERA. Game time on Thursday is 6:00pm CDT.
