San Antonio Missions News Release
NEW ORLEANS - Travis Shaw slugged a pair of homers as part of a three-hit as the Missions hit four homers in total and beat the New Orleans Baby Cakes, 6-5, on Friday night at Shrine On Airline Ballpark.
Shaw's two longballs totaled 891 feet, as the slugger tries to regain his form that propelled him to back-to-back 30-homer seasons with Milwaukee during each of the past two seasons. The veteran was recently optioned to San Antonio by the Brewers after hitting .164-6-13 across 57 games with Milwaukee.
Mauricio Dubon and Trent Grisham also went deep for the Missions, who have slugged six homers thru the first two games of the series. Dubon has hit five of his 14 homeruns at the expense of New Orleans.
Both clubs finished with 13 hits. Nate Orf matched Shaw with three hits, while Jacob Nottingham and Grisham each chipped in a pair for the Missions, who entered play batting a Triple-A-worst .205 over the previous nine contests while scoring more than three runs only once.
The Baby Cakes tied the score at five in the seventh inning off relievers Taylor Williams and Alex Wilson. That denied starter Thomas Jankins an opportunity at winning his ninth game of the year. Jankins worked around a season high nine hits to go 5-1/3 innings. The right-hander had gone 6-0 over his previous seven starts while leading the Pacific Coast League in victories during that stretch, dating to May 27.
San Antonio moved two games in front in the American Southern Division standings thanks to Round Rock getting swept in a doubleheader against Oklahoma City on Friday night.
TBD vs. LHP Mike Kickham (3-3, 4.30) 6:00 PM
