San Antonio Turns Tables on Baby Cakes

After the New Orleans Baby Cakes hit four home runs in Thursday's series opener, the San Antonio Missions turned the tables with four homers of their own on Friday night to claim a 6-5 win.

Trent Grisham led off the game with a home run, Mauricio Dubon went deep in the third and Travis Shaw hit the first of his two solo shots an inning later. All four homers came against 'Cakes starter Cody Poteet, the first time a New Orleans pitcher has surrendered four home runs in a game since May 16, 2016 when El Paso did so against Chris Narveson.

Eddy Alvarez took Missions starter Thomas Jankins over the center field fence in the fifth inning, his second homer in as many games and sixth of the year, to briefly draw the Baby Cakes within a run.

Shaw's second homer came in the top of the sixth, and Jacob Nottingham and Troy Stokes collected back-to-back doubles in the seventh to put San Antonio in front, 5-2.

But the 'Cakes responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score. Tyler Heineman led off with a double and scored on a soft grounder by Magneuris Sierra, who reached on an error. A walk to Lewis Brinson was followed two batters later by Austin Dean's pinch hit two-run single.

Cory Spangenberg started the Missions' winning rally with a leadoff single against R.J. Alvarez (1-5) in the eighth, advanced into scoring position on a ground out, and brought in the go-ahead run when Alvarez committed a throwing error on Shaw's infield single.

New Orleans put runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the frame, but Sierra popped out and Brinson struck out for the third time in the game to end the threat. Jon Olczak retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first save.

Alex Wilson (3-1) was credited with the victory despite yielding three hits in 1 1/3 innings of relief after Jankins scattered two runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Making his second Triple-A start, Poteet fanned seven without a walk and allowed five runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings.

The Baby Cakes and Missions continue the four-game series on Saturday at 6 p.m.
