Mets Offense Shines in 15-8 Victory over Knights

June 11, 2019 - International League (IL) - Syracuse Mets News Release

Syracuse, NY - Danny Espionsa and René Rivera both homered in the seventh inning to help the Syracuse Mets score their most runs in a home game this season and top the Charlotte Knights,15-8, on Tuesday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

Syracuse (31-33) jumped out to a first-inning lead. Two Major League rehabbers helped start the rally. Brandon Nimmo walked to begin the frame, and Robinson Canó doubled. Danny Espinosa followed with an RBI single to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Then, after a force out in which Rajai Davis replaced Espinosa on first, Davis stole second. Two batters later, René Rivera hit a two-run single to left to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Mets added two more in the second. Rubén Tejada walked. Nimmo then hit a ground ball to third, and former Syracuse Chief Matt Skole made an error fielding the ball, putting runners on first and second base. Canó then singled to center to make the score 4-0. Then, after Danny Espinosa reached first on a force out, he stole second base. Seby Zavala's throw to second was wide for an error, and Nimmo scored from third on the play to push the lead to 5-0.

Charlotte (35-28) got on the board in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Daniel Palka singled and scored from first on a double by Zack Collins to bring the deficit to four, 5-1. Then in the fifth, with Mendick on first, Adam Engel hit his sixth home run of the season to bring the score to 5-3.

The Mets were quick to answer in the bottom of the fifth inning though. Rivera singled, Dilson Herrera doubled, and Tejada hit an RBI single to left to score both runners. Tim Tebow then singled, and two batters later, Travis Taijeron pinch hit for Canó and walked to load the bases. Espinosa then walked as well to bring in the Mets eighth run. Davis followed with a ground ball into a force out at second, bringing home Tebow for a 9-3 lead.

The Knights continued the scoring in the sixth. Collins walked, and Alcides Escobar doubled to center to close Charlotte within 9-4. Then, Zavala walked, and Mendick singled to right to score Escobar and move Zavala to third. Engel continued his day with a two-run triple to cut the deficit to two at 9-7. Engel later scored on a wild pitch to cap a five-run inning and make it a 9-8 ballgame.

But the Mets broke the game open in the seventh. Tebow was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and Nimmo walked. Taijeron followed with a double to left field to score Tebow. Espinosa followed with his tenth home run of the season: a three-run shot, giving him five RBIs for the day and pushing the Syracuse advantage to five, 13-8. Three batters later, after a walk, Rivera hit a two-run home run to up his RBI count to four on a four-hit day for a 15-8 Mets lead.

Syracuse continues its three-game series with Charlotte on Tuesday night. RHP Casey Coleman will be on the mound for the Mets opposite LHP Ross Detwiler for the Knights. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium.
