Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - After dropping game one of the series against Toledo on Wednesday night, the Memphis Redbirds would not be denied on Thursday night. The 'Birds took both halves of a doubleheader against the Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A affiliate, Detroit Tigers) on a perfect night for baseball in Memphis. The doubleheader was played to make up for a rained-out game on Tuesday.
Game one of the doubleheader was a slugfest. The two teams combined to score 16 runs on 24 hits, with the Redbirds taking a 10-6 victory.
Memphis had not scored in its past two games, and they changed that in a big way in the front half of the doubleheader. The 'Birds blew the game open with a mammoth fourth inning, erasing a 3-1 deficit by scoring eight runs on eight hits in the frame. Memphis had five extra-base hits in the extravagant fourth inning, including a double and a triple from Conner Capel and a two-run home run in the season debut for Justin Toerner. The Redbirds sent 12 men to the plate in the fourth inning.
Tommy Parsons worked six of the seven innings in the first game of the doubleheader, allowing six runs on 11 hits while striking out four Mud Hens batters. Connor Jones clinched the victory by working a 1-2-3 seventh inning, fanning two Toledo batters in the process.
While the first game was a slugfest, the second game was a tightly contested pitcher's duel. The game was tied 2-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, as the two teams combined for just seven total hits in the game's first six and a half innings.
Capel was a shining star again at the plate for Memphis in game two of the doubleheader, smacking a solo home run and an RBI triple. In the two halves of the doubleheader, the native Texan went a combined 4-6 with a double, two triples, a home run and three RBIs.
On the first at-bat of the bottom of the seventh and last inning, Rayder Ascanio sent the crowd home happy. He launched a no-doubt home run over the left-field fence, giving Memphis a 3-2 victory. The Redbirds have now won five times on walk-off hits this season, rallying back from an earlier deficit to win every single time.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
