Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) -- In front of the largest crowd of the season at Truist Field, the Charlotte Knights shut out the hottest team in baseball on Friday night.
RHP Mike Wright (2-1, 2.10) struck-out eight batters over seven shutout innings and two relievers combined to hold the Nashville Sounds scoreless over the final two innings en route to Charlotte's first shutout of the season, 1-0. The win snapped Nashville's winning streak at 15-straight games.
"Michael brought it tonight," manager Wes Helms said during his nightly post-game zoom interview. "He got up this morning and gave us what we needed."
Making his fifth start of the season, Wright twirled seven masterful innings on Friday on way to his second win in as many outings. The South Carolina native, who allowed just two hits on the night, lowered his ERA to 2.10 on the season -- the fifth-best in the league this season. He also moved into sixth place in strikeouts (37), fifth in WHIP (0.90) and eighth in innings pitched (30.0 IP).
The Knights scored the lone run of the game on an RBI groundout by third baseman Jake Burger in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chicago White Sox outfielder Adam Engel, who continued his major league rehab assignment, scored on the play to give the Knights a lead they would not relinquish. Engel swiped three bases in the game and had one of Charlotte's four hits.
LHP Jace Fry, who also continued his major league rehab assignment from the White Sox, tossed a scoreless eighth inning. LHP Nik Turley struck-out one batter in the ninth to close the door for his second save of the season.
The Knights welcomed 6,706 fans through the gates for Friday's two-hour and 22-minute game. The impressive win was capped off by thrilling post-game fireworks.
The two teams will continue their six-game series on Saturday with a 7:04 p.m. game from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time Knights broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and CharlotteKnights.com. The game will also be broadcast live on MY 12 WMYT. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for Saturday's game.
