VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals are proud to announce that Steve McCarthy has been named the Admirals' 2001-2002 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. The award honors the player adjudged to have made the greatest commitment to his community and charitable organizations throughout the course of the season.

Originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the first round (23rd overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, McCarthy is in his third professional season. Last season, he skated in seven contests for the Admirals, in addition to 44 appearances with the Blackhawks. He was assigned to Norfolk on October 11, 2001.

Soon after joining Norfolk this season, the 21-year old native of Trail, B.C., approached the Admirals' Director of Community Relations, volunteering to participate in community events, especially those which involved children. When the Admirals held their annual Toy Toss in December, McCarthy, along with teammate Valeri Zelepukin, personally delivered the toys, in McCarthy's own vehicle, to the Ronald McDonald House in Norfolk.

Desiring involvement in more community activities, McCarthy joined teammates Mike Souza and Casey Hankinson in a visit to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk. There, he greeted many of the young patients, signing autographs, discussing hockey, and even taking the time to play games with them.

In recognition of his efforts, McCarthy will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

McCarthy is now a finalist for the AHL's 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 27 individual team award winners to be honored during the Calder Cup 2002 Finals as the 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner.

The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-96) registering 169 points (70-99) in 207 AHL games. He also played in 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
