Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates are proud to announce that Mel Angelstad has been named the Pirates' 2001-2002 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. The award honors the player adjudged to have made the greatest commitment to his community and charitable organizations throughout the course of the season.

Angelstad has been a tireless worker on behalf of the Pirates, taking part in the team's Goals for Success program whereby players visit schools to encourage students to set goals and live healthy lifestyles. In addition, he has contributed to the Pirates efforts to raise money for the United Way of Greater Portland. Angelstad has lent his support through direct contributions as well as time and effort publicizing fund-raising events that the Pirates have held on behalf of the United Way. He took part in the Pirates' "Skate-a-thon" held for the United Way in October of 2001.

Angelstad has also quietly gone out of his way to visit sick children in area hospitals, offering his support as they recover from illness. He has taken part in a local television station's program, Thursday's Child, which attempts to find homes for foster children. Mel arranged for tickets to a game and provided the child a guided tour of the dressing room afterward.

In recognition of his efforts, Angelstad will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

Angelstad is now a finalist for the AHL's 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 27 individual team award winners to be honored during the Calder Cup 2002 Finals as the 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner.

The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-96) registering 169 points (70-99) in 207 AHL games. He also played in 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
