IceHogs Sneak by Kalamazoo in Shootout Win
March 27, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rockford IceHogs News Release
Rockford, Ill. The Rockford IceHogs continue to rack up records, and wins, as they close the season with a flurry. The IceHogs squeezed by the Kalamazoo Wings 4-3 in a shootout Wednesday in front of 3,309 fans at the Rockford MetroCentre, winning their franchise record sixth straight game.
After a scoreless third period the teams needed a shootout to decide the game. A combined nine shootout goals were scored, with Randy Holmes, Michael Goldkind, Michael Ford and Harry Schwefel all lighting the lamp for the Wings. The four overtime markers were matched by the Hogs T.J. Guidarelli, Jeff DaCosta, David Hoogsteen and Jeremy Vokes.
But it wasn't until the second round of sudden death play that the Hogs were able to slide by the Wings. Clint Wensley sealed the victory in the second half of the round after Debus turned away Ted Laviolette's attempt.
Debus etched his name into the IceHogs record book by recording his seventh straight victory. The netminder finished with 38 regulation saves. Three of Debus' wins during the streak have been decided in shootouts.
Center Jeff Antonovich put the Hogs on the board at 5:42 of the first period, beating Wings goalie Scott Langkow for the early 1-0 lead. Winger Nick Checco then gave Rockford its first two-goal lead heading into the break with his tally at 11:57.
Kalamazoo winger Darcy Anderson cut into the Hogs lead 2:42 into the second period. Antonovich countered with his second goal of the game at 4:50. But the Wings stormed back with a pair of goals to tie the game heading into the third period. Center Michael Goldkind beat Debus at 9:19, and defenseman Dave Agnew's equalizer at 15:26.
The two teams combined for zero penalty minutes, an IceHogs team record. The Hogs also established a new team record for wins in a month with nine.
Next Home Game: Friday, March 29 vs. the Quad City Mallards. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. The season finale features Nascar Night and the #2 Rusty Wallace Miller Lite Ford Taurus, brought to you by Miller Lite. Come early as the Hogs will also announce their team awards on the ice prior to the game.
