March 27, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Worcester IceCats News Release
WORCESTER, MA - The Worcester IceCats are proud to announce that Worcester native Ed Campbell has been named the IceCats 2001-2002 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. The award honors the player adjudged to have made the greatest commitment to his community and charitable organizations throughout the course of the season.
Born and raised in Worcester, the IceCats Captain has led the team on and off the ice. He was active during the off-season with various charity events and community appearances. During the season, Campbell has not only made sure younger players have become involved in the community, but he has been an enthusiastic participant as well.
Showing the way, Campbell's contributions have not been specific to one group. He has made time to see the mentally disabled, inner-city youth and school-aged children. Ed spearheaded today's team outing to distribute Easter baskets to the children at UMASS Memorial Medical Center.
In recognition of his efforts, Campbell will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.
Campbell is now a finalist for the AHL's 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 27 individual team award winners to be honored during the Calder Cup 2002 Finals as the 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner.
The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-96) registering 169 points (70-99) in 207 AHL games. He also played in 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
The 'Cats host Lowell on Friday and Providence Saturday. Both games begin at 7:35 PM. Tickets are on sale now at all TicketMaster outlets, including the Box Office at Worcester's Centrum Centre.
