Saint John Flames News Release

Saint John, NB - The Saint John Flames announced today that Micki DuPont has been named the Flames 2001-02 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. The award honors the player deemed to have made the greatest commitment to his community.

DuPont has been active in the Greater Saint John community in his sophomore season with the Flames, assisting both community and charitable organizations with fundraising as well as in creating awareness. Having recovered from an eye injury suffered in March of 2001, DuPont approached the Canadian National Institute for the Blind with interest in drawing awareness to eye safety and raising funds for the visually impaired. The two partnered to create the Goals for Sight Program, which has to date raised over $5,000 for the CNIB. Other organizations that have benefited from DuPont's involvement include the Salvation Army, Play Ball for St. Joe' s, the Heart & Stroke Foundation, the Flames Stick to Reading Program, the Flames Adopt a Player Program, the Flames NBTel Skills Camp Program, school visits and Hot Stove evenings. DuPont also played an active role in the Flames 2001-02 season ticket drive.

DuPont, 21, won the Calder Cup in his rookie season of 2000-01 with the Saint John Flames. The native of Calgary, Alberta also received recognition as the Flames 2001 Rookie of the Year and was named to the 2001 AHL All-Rookie team. This season, DuPont represented Saint John at the AHL All-Star Classic in St. John's, Newfoundland and was a member of the Canadian squad at the 2001 Sweden Games.

In recognition of his efforts, DuPont will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game. DuPont will represent the Flames as a finalist for the AHL's 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year.

The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-96) registering 169 points (70-99) in 207 AHL games. He also played in 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
