March 27, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose are proud to announce that Jimmy Roy has been named the Moose's 2001-2002 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. The award honors the player adjudge to have made the greatest commitment to his community and charitable organizations throughout the course of the season.
Jimmy Roy has worked tirelessly throughout the Manitoba community in his past five seasons with the Moose and this year was no exception. A few highlights from his 2001-02 season: He volunteered his services to tape a "Don't Drink and Drive" public service message played after every home game, made an early morning visit in December to a local shopping mall to talk to a local radio morning show to support the annual Christmas Cheer Board Drive, led "Practice With The Moose" promotions for young hockey players in the community and was a children's favorite at the Moose Children's Hospital Visit in December.
As well, Roy has been to numerous schools throughout the year to read to, meet and talk the school kids. The schools included: Samuel Burland, Oakenwald, J. A. Cuddy, Harold Hatcher, Governor Semple and Laura Secord. He bought tickets for his hometown Sioux Lookout, ON to bring in kids to enjoy a Moose game and tour the dressing room after the game.
In recognition of his efforts, Jimmy Roy will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during a on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.
Roy is now a finalist for the AHL's 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 27 individual team award winners to be honored during the Calder Cup 2002 Finals as the 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner.
The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-96) registering 169 points (70-99) in 207 AHL games. He also played in 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
