Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins announced today that left wing Jay Henderson has been named the team's 2001-02 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. The award honors the player adjudged to have made the greatest commitment to his community and charitable organizations throughout the season.

Henderson, 23-year-old native of Edmonton, Alberta, has not played this season due to rehabilitation from knee surgery. He first came to Providence late in the 1997-98 season, and is one of two players in the Boston Bruins' organization remaining from the P-Bruins' 1999 Calder Cup team (Boston goaltender John Grahame). He has 37-44-81 totals in 167 career games with Providence, and ranks fifth on the franchise career list with 504 PIM. Henderson, who was Boston's 12th pick, 246th overall, in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, has 1-3-4 totals and 37 PIM in 33 career games with Boston.

Henderson is being recognized for his dedication and positive influence on the youth of Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. He has spoken to numerous youth groups about his living with diabetes, helping to educate and support youngsters who also have the disease. He has also participated in events such as the American Cancer Society Daffodil Delivery Day and the Nutritional and Exercise Expo, held in Providence. In addition, Henderson has made visits to several schools and reading events.

In recognition of his efforts, Henderson will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

"I feel very honored to be receiving this award," says Henderson. "It's always been very important to me to help give something to my community. I remember when I was growing up in Edmonton and was a huge fan of the Oilers. I always wished I could get the chance to meet my hockey heroes, because I looked up to them so much. I know it means a lot to kids to get the chance to meet professional athletes, and if I can help make them aware of the importance of reading, or help a youngster with diabetes understand his disease a little better, and feel good about himself, that's even better."

Henderson is now a finalist for the AHL's 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, which honors the overall HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 27 individual team award winners to be honored during the 2002 Calder Cup Finals.

The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Hershey Bears (1992-96) and also played 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Tickets for all regular season home games are available online at www.providencebruins.com, as well as all TicketMaster outlets (401-331-2211 or 508/617-931-2000) and the Dunkin' Donuts Center Providence box office.
