Matt Herr Named Bears' Man of the Year

March 27, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Hershey Bears News Release

HERSHEY – The Bears are proud to announce that forward Matt Herr has been named the Bears' 2001-2002 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. The award honors the player judged to have made the greatest commitment to his community and charitable organizations throughout the course of the season.

Herr initiated Herr's Heroes, a reading program with the Milton Hershey Elementary School. Every Tuesday in February and March, Herr read to Kindergarten students at the Elementary School. He helped secured a sponsor, Herr's Foods, for the program. Herr Foods purchased Bears' tickets for each student involved in the program. Matt made multiple visits to Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to visit with infirm children. He attended the annual Boy Scout convention at the Lebanon Valley Mall, participated in the NHL Diversity Task Force in Huntington, West Virginia and joined the Hockey in Harlem program to raise money for inner city kids.

In recognition of his efforts, Herr will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during a on-ice presentation prior to the Bears' game on April 6 against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Matt is now a finalist for the AHL's 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award honoring the overall HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year. One player will be selected from the 27 individual team award winners to be honored during the Calder Cup 2002 Finals as the 2001-02 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner.

The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award is named after the late Yanick Dupre, who passed away in August of 1997 at the age of 24, following a 16-month battle with leukemia. Dupre played four seasons with the Bears (1992-96) registering 169 points (70-99) in 207 AHL games. He also played in 35 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers.
