Fresno Falcons News Release
Victoria, British Columbia - Kris Mayotte made 38 saves to lead the Fresno Falcons to a 3-2 win over the Victoria Salmon Kings on Monday in front of 4,556 fans at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre. The loss is just Victoria's third loss at home in regulation this season.
Igor Gongalsky gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead 8:32 into the first period with his 16th goal of the season. Gongalsky intercepted a Victoria clearing attempt at the top of the left-wing circle, and beat goaltender Julien Ellis off his backhand for the unassisted goal.
Victoria pulled even late in the opening period. Wes Goldie skated into the right-wing circle of the Fresno zone, and blasted a slap shot past Mayotte for his 22nd goal of the year.
The Falcons power play put Fresno back on top 12:39 into the second period. Brady Leisenring took a centering feed from Matt Stefanishion at the hash marks, and ripped a wrist shot past Ellis making it 2-1.
Fresno extended the lead to 3-1 at 18:22, just after another power play had expired. Ellis made two saves in front, but P.O. Beaulieu was able to swipe the puck into the net on the third opportunity for his 10th goal of the season, adding to his career high.
Victoria added a power-play goal of its own at 9:11 of the third period to pull within one. Kevin Estrada skated into the Falcons' zone and beat Mayotte with a wrist shot from the right-wing circle for his 14th goal of the season.
Mayotte held the lead from there, turning aside 13 shots in the third period, including four in the final minute when the Salmon Kings had a 6-on-4 advantage thanks to a power play and a pulled goaltender.
The Salmon Kings out-shot the Falcons 40-30, marking the first time Fresno has been outshot in 11 games.
Fresno and Victoria conclude their two-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Catch all of the action on 790 ESPN Radio, The Deuce, starting with the Port of Subs Pre-Game Show at 6:45.
