Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA - At 9:30 a.m. on a Monday morning after a Chiefs Sunday home game the War Memorial is usually quiet. This morning, however there was plenty of activity as an ESPN crew prepared to film an interview at the arena.

Seated high up in section 12 with lights flooding their seats, reporter Chris Connelly interviewed former Johnstown Jet, Dave Hanson. However, Connelly wasn't there to talk about Hanson's playing days in Johnstown, or his role as one of the Hanson Brothers in the film "Slapshot". At least, that wasn't his main reason for being there.

The focus of Connelly's story is on Hanson's son Christian who is in his third season of hockey at Notre Dame University. Hanson currently ranks eighth on the Irish in scoring with nine goals and six assists while playing in all 32 of the team's games. The junior's nine goals are tied for third most on the team.

The elder Hanson, who rejoined his linemates Steve and Jeff Carlson at the Chiefs' December 22 contest against Cincinnati, did don his "Slapshot" gear for the camera crew before they called it a day.

According to ESPN Feature Producer, Denny Wolfe, the story, which also features an interview with Christian in South Bend, is slated to air on the Sunday, March 2 evening episode of "Sportscenter." The story will run again the next day on Monday morning, as well.

Coincidentally, the Hansons aren't the only connection between Johnstown and Notre Dame. Defenseman Brian Deeth's younger brother, Kevin, is a sophomore center for the Irish, and the team's fourth-leading scorer.

This Wednesday, February 13, the Johnstown Chiefs will be sponsoring a "Tattoo Night". All fans that show off their Johnstown Chiefs tattoo will be rewarded with a FREE TICKET!!! The Chiefs fan with the BIGGEST PERMANENT TATTOO will receive FREE SEASON TICKETS FOR NEXT SEASON!!! If you miss that one, catch the Chiefs on Friday, February 15 when Captain Jack Sparrow will be in attendance! Great seats are still available for both games at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial. Call 536-5156 or visit www.johnstownchiefs.com to get yours today!
