February 18, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The two hottest teams in the Central Hockey League faced each other Friday night at Independence Events Center. The Missouri Mavericks, who entered the night in third place in the CHL's Turner Conference and winners of four of their last five games, took on the first place Rapid City Rush, winners of 11 straight games. The Rush would be the team to continue their hot streak, as they would skate to a 3-1 victory over the Mavericks.

The Mavs got the scoring underway with recently acquired defenseman Steven Later's first goal with the Mavericks. Later's tally was assisted by a pair of fairly new members of the Mavericks, with Todd Griffith and Shawn Fensel getting helpers on the goal. The goal came on the power play Mavs' goaltender Robby Nolan would make nine saves in the period.

The Rush tied the score one minute into the second period with a goal from Konrad Reeder. Assists on the goal went to Scott Wray and Vladmir Hartinger. The score would remain tied through the remainder of the period and both teams went into the final intermission tied at one goal. Rush goaltender Danny Battochio stopped all 14 Mavs' shots in the period.

The stalemate continued well into the third period as the game appeared to be headed for an extra session. But a bad bounce in the slot created a turnover in the Mavs' zone and Rapid City took advantage. Josh Beaulieu scooped up the puck and shot it over the glove of Nolan, giving the Rush a late third period lead. Staring at a one-goal deficit, the Mavs pulled their goaltender in favor of the extra attacker. The Rush forced a turnover in the neutral zone and Ryan Menei put the game away with an empty net goal.

The Mavs finished the night one-for-five on the power play on the night. Rapid City was unsuccessful in two man power advantages. The Mavericks piled up 32 shots on the Rush, and held the visitors to just 22 shots.

The Mavericks close out the weekend tomorrow night against the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at Independence Events Center. Then on Sunday, the Mavs head to Central Illinois to take on the Evansville Icemen at Swonder Ice Arena. Tickets are available for all Mavericks' home games at the Independence Events Center Box Office, by calling (800) 745-3000 or visiting www.TicketMaster.com.
