'Dogs Salvage Point in 4-3 Overtime Loss

February 18, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Arizona Sundogs News Release

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Trailing late in the first of five straight games away from Tim's Toyota Center, Kyle Hood forced overtime with his 10th of the year but former Sundogs defenseman Matt Hanson netted the game winner on his club's 50th shot on the night with just 21 seconds to play in the extra frame as the Colorado Eagles skated away with the 4-3 victory.

Arizona jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Joey Sides less than seven minutes into the opening frame but Colorado responded with goals by Steve Haddon and Kevin Ulanski to even the score at two after 20 minutes of play.

Aaron Schneekloth gave the Eagles their first lead of the game with 13.8 seconds remaining in the second period, collapsing into the slot from the point and sending a backhand along the ice between the legs of Levente Szuper on a delayed penalty.

Hood evened the score at three at the 16:17 mark of the third period, swiping a rebound past Kyle Jones as both teams skated 4-on-4.

Sides tallied his first of two first-period markers 3:59 into the contest, redirecting a Hood shot from the top of the right circle past Jones less than a minute into Arizona's first power play opportunity of the night, then recorded his CHL-best fifth shorthanded goal and eighth shorthanded point of the season at the 6:48 mark, lifting a backhand over the blocker of Jones after exiting the penalty box and skating in alone on the Colorado netminder.

With John Wessbecker in the penalty box for slashing, Haddon cut the deficit back to one with a power-play goal from the near post, slipping a shot five-hole past Szuper just 27 seconds after seeing his team go down by a pair of goals.

Ulanski tied the game at two just past the period's midway point, knocking a rebound across the goal line. Scott May assisted on the play, circling up the sideboards and across the blue line before sending a shot on net.

The Eagles' 50-26 shot advantage wasn't reflective of the scoring chances in the contest as Arizona proved opportunistic, collecting quality scoring chances throughout the contest. Patrick Schafer found the far post late in the final period and Cam Keith had two excellent breaks while shorthanded early on in the game.

The Sundogs scored just 48 seconds into their first power play but were unable to convert on their next five man advantage chances including a lengthy five-minute power play late in the opening frame and a shortened one-minute advantage in overtime. The Eagles finished 1-for-4 with the extra skater.

Arizona (19-25-6) continues its five-game road trip tomorrow at 7:05pm (Arizona time) against the Turner Conference-leading Rapid City Rush (31-17-4), winners of 12 straight coming into the contest.
