Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (21-24-5) scored four second period goals and watched Jerad Kaufmann make a 25 save shutout in the Bees 4-0 victory over the Laredo Bucks (16-26-7) on Friday night. Tomas Klempa scored a pair of goals for the Bees, including the game winner while Darcy Campbell added a pair of assists. The Bees are now one game away for clinching the first-ever Cricket Mayor's Cup.
After the two teams skated to a scoreless first period the Killer Bees erupted for four goals in the second period including three power-play strikes.
Tomas Klempa scored the first power-play goal for the Bees at 1:31 of the second. Klempa went driving towards the net and after a first save was made the rebound bounced it's way past Pier Pelletier. Dan Gendur and Darcy Campbell earned the assists.
Less than a minute later with the Bees still on the man-advantage Brett Wilson scored his 12th goal of the season at 2:16. Wilson's goal was a deflection in front after a Matt Smyth shot from the point. Kyle Radke earned the secondary assist.
The Bees weren't done as they added a third power-play goal at 15:10 as Aaron Lee deflected a Darcy Campbell shot from the point over the shoulder of Pelletier just four seconds into the power-play.
The Bees added a fourth goal before the horn would sound to end the period with just 44 seconds remaining on the clock. Aaron Lewicki took a Brett Wilson shot towards the net on a quasi-breakaway. Pelletier was able to make the first save but the loose puck was picked up by Tomas Klempa and buried for his second goal of the game, his 20th of the season.
The third period would be a back and forth affair with each goalies once again keeping the other teams off the board. Laredo's Neil Trimm had a breakaway with less than three minutes remaining but Jerad Kaufmann was up the challenge making the save.
Jerad Kaufmann made 25 saves in his first shutout of the season in what is only his second start since being traded to the Bees by Quad City.
The Bees and Bucks will battle again Saturday night as the Bees look to capture the first ever Cricket Mayor's Cup. Tickets are available by calling 843-PUCK (7825) or visiting killerbeehockey.com.
