Kansas City Mavericks News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi - The Missouri Mavericks won their third straight game with a 5-2 victory over the Mississippi RiverKings Tuesday night at DeSoto Civic Center. The victory marks the first three-game win streak in Mavericks history. Missouri had a three-goal first period and cruised to the 5-2 victory in which five different Mavericks scored goals. Goaltender Alexandre Vincent stopped 27 of 29 shots for his second consecutive win and fourth victory overall. Missouri will look for four straight when they host the Colorado Eagles on New Year's Eve, Thursday night, at Independence Events Center.
"We got off to a great start," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "We were very opportunistic and (Alexandre) Vincent was incredible in net."
The Mavericks three-goal first period started with Jeff MacDermid's eighth goal of the season at the 10:04 mark. Forward Carlyle Lewis quickly extended the Mavericks' lead to 2-0 when he jammed a loose puck past RiverKings' goaltender Kevin Beech. Finally at the 15:36 mark, Tommy Lange took a lead pass from Nick Sirota behind the Mississippi defense and scored on a forehand on the breakaway. Missouri outshot Mississippi 12-9 in the period and took the 3-0 lead into the intermission.
In the second period, David Simoes made it a 3-1 game when he beat Vincent at the 11:06 mark. Missouri killed three RiverKings power plays in the period to keep the two-goal lead, and Chad Hinz made it a 4-1 lead at 15:28 when he banged home a rebound. Although the Mavericks were outshot 15-5 in the second period, they kept their three-goal lead going into the third.
RiverKings' forward Bobby Chaumont scored late in the third period to cut the lead to two goals once again, but it was too little too late for Mississippi. At the 17:40 mark, Mavs' forward Bill Vandermeer tallied an empty netter to cap the scoring and give the Mavericks a 5-2 win.
Sirota and Mike Burgoyne each had a pair of assists for Missouri and Vandermeer had two points with a goal and an assist. Missouri finished 0-4 on the power play, but killed all five of Mississippi's chances in the win. Missouri is now 9-0-0 this season when the team doesn't allow a power play goal.
Missouri's next home game is New Year's Eve, Thursday, December 31 against the Colorado Eagles at 7:05 p.m. New Year's Eve Party Packs are available and include four terrace tickets, four Pepsis and four hotdogs for just $60 (normally $100). To take advantage of this special offer, fans must call the Mavericks' front office at (816) 252-7825. The offer is not available at the Box Office, and party packs must be purchased by noon on December 31. For more information, visit www.MissouriMavericks.com.
