Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- A three-goal first period held up for the Missouri Mavericks, as they defeated the Mississippi RiverKings for the first time ever on Tuesday, December 29 at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. The loss stopped a two-game winning streak by the RiverKings, who fell to 14-13-2 for the season. Missouri won their third game in a row and rose to 13-14-1 for the year. Mississippi lost for the first time against the expansion Mavericks after two straight wins. The first period belonged completely to the Mavericks, who struck with the trio of goals in the span of 5:32 of the session. Jeff MacDermid, Carlyle Lewis, and Tommy Lange all scored on Mississippi goaltender Kevin Beech for the 3-0 lead after twenty minutes of play. Mississippi came back in the second period when defenseman David Simoes scored his first goal of the season, wristing in a rebound with just under nine minutes left in the period to get the RiverKings within two goals at 3-1, Missouri. Ryan Campbell and Matt Summers assisted on Simoes' goal. However, the Mavericks took the lead back to four goals before the second period ending on a red-lighter by Chad Hinz with four and a half minutes left in the middle period. Mississippi could not score in the third period until Beech was pulled for a sixth attacker in the final five minutes of the contest. Bobby Chaumont found the net with his 13th goal of the season, assisted by Louis Dumont and Simoes at 16:32, as the RiverKings again got within two at 4-2. But, as the RiverKings continued to press the issue, Missouri's Bill Vandermeer filled an empty net with about two and a half minutes left for the final score of 5-2 for the Mavericks. Neither team scored on the power play, with the RiverKings getting five chances and Missouri having four extra man opportunities. Mississippi outshot the Mavericks for the game by a 29-20 margin, getting 15 shots away in the second period and holding Missouri to just three attempts in the final twenty minutes. Beech (3-2-0) finished with 15 saves and four goals allowed, while Alexandre Vincent was the winning goaltender for Missouri with a two-goal, 27-save performance. The game was the first for new RiverKings forward Anders Strome, who was claimed off waivers Thursday after being released earlier in the year by the defending champion Texas Brahmas. Mississippi will next play Tulsa on Thursday, New Year's Eve, in a game starting at 7:05 PM. New goaltender Tim Boron and defenseman Kevin Truelson will join the team and are expected to be in the line up for the first time with the RiverKings that evening.
They are coming to Mississippi in a trade that sent defenseman Steve Makway, forward Kevin Cooper, and goaltender Ian Keserich to the Wichita Thunder earlier on Tuesday. The next RiverKings home game will be on Friday, January 1st, when the Mavericks return to Southaven for a 7:05 PM contest. Tickets for all RiverKings home games are available through Ticketmaster and the DeSoto Civic Center box office.
