December 29, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder dropped a 4-2 decision to the Rapid City Rush on Tuesday night. Brandon Kaleniecki scored two goals, but the Rush made use of single scores in each of the first two periods.
The Thunder fell behind midway through the first. Rush forward Rich Hansen scored on a long wrist shot from just inside the blue line at 10:31 in the first. Hansen was setup by a drop pass in neutral ice from Scott Wray.
Rapid City extended its lead to 2-0 in the second. Blaine Jarvis streaked down the left side of the slot and tipped in a backdoor pass from Scott Bartlett at 7:29. Marc Belanger picked up his first fighting major of the season at the 10:30 marker. After Belanger checked Reaney, Derek LeBlanc grabbed the Thunder right wing to start the bout.
Down 2-0 in the third, Kaleniecki took a shot from the left side of the net that deflected off of goaltender Miguel Beaudry and ricocheted behind the goal. Kaleniecki collected the rebound and wrapped around to the right side of the crease and scored on a backhander at 11:43 to cut into the lead. 50 seconds later, Jon Pelle collected a loose puck inside the Thunder zone and sprinted to the net on a short breakaway before netting a high backhand shot that got over the shoulder of Scott Campbell.
Kaleniecki made it a one-goal game for a second time in the period in the final minute, wristing a shorthanded goal just under the crossbar with 25.4 seconds left in the game. On the ensuing faceoff, Wichita pulled Campbell to even the attack. Rapid City won the draw and eventually iced the game on an empty net goal from Pelle at 19:43.
The Thunder outshot the Rush 32 to 26. Wichita was 0 for 4 on the power play while going 4 for 5 on the penalty kill.
Earlier today, the Thunder acquired defenseman Steve Makway, left wing Kevin Cooper, and goaltender Ian Keserich from the Mississippi RiverKings in exchange for Kevin Truelson and Tim Boron.
The Thunder resumes action on Thursday when they host the Allen Americans at 5:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.
