INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Mavericks took 1 point in the ECHL Central Division standings following a tough 4-3 overtime loss to the Allen Americans on Friday night.
Tensions were high from the first puck drop as the game saw its first penalty minutes dealt to Scott Langdon and Tyler Barr after a lengthy bought between the two forwards at center ice 2:09 into play. Not even a minute later Ryley Grantham and Garrett Clarke dropped the gloves at 2:53. The first period collected 32 penalty minutes before ten minutes had passed.
After holding a stalemate through majority of the opening frame, Andrew Courtney made the first mark on the scoreboard at with only 3 minutes left in the period at 16:58, lighting up Independence Events Center with his nineteenth goal of the season assisted by Sebastien Thinel and Landon Oslanski.
The Mavericks doubled their lead at 18:38 of the second period when Josh Brittain, assisted by Geoff Walker and Jared Brown ignited the fans of the IEC into boisterous cheers.
Allen finally made their move in the third period, and in a big way, scoring three times through the twenty-minute frame via Jamie Schaafsma, Gary Steffes, and Chad Costello. The Mavs answered back the first Allen goal on the power play when Courtney tallied his second of the night and twentieth of the season, aided by Josh Brittain and Sebastien Thinel at 7:55 of the third period. Steffes' goal came at 11:52, also on a power play for Allen, and Costello tied the game 3-3 at 17:15.
When 60 minutes of hockey could not determine a winner, the game decision headed to over time. The period was evenly matched until Allen's Steffes took the only shot of the frame and captured the extra point for the Americans 4-3.
Mavericks forward Dylan Hood was injured during the overtime period. At this time his condition has not been released.
The Mavericks play their next game at home on Saturday night when they host the Rapid City Rush at Independence Events Center during their annual "Pink in the Rink Night." The Mavs will be wearing specialty pink jerseys that will be auctioned off directly after the game in Sections 101 and 102. Proceeds from the auction will benefit Susan G.
