FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Gladiators (16-30-3-1) will take on the Fort Wayne Komets (34-12-1-3) for the third and final time this season on Saturday night. The previous two meetings have been extremely close affairs, with the Gladiators getting edged out by one goal each game.
In last night's contest, Gwinnett lost a 2-1 game that was decided on an errant clearing play with two minutes left in regulation. After goaltender Kent Patterson shoveled the puck around to the right half-boards, former Gladiator Mike Embach rushed in to steal it, and wrist a quick shot at the empty net before Patterson could recover.
After tonight's game, the Gladiators will travel east to Toledo for their fourth and final game against the Toledo Walleye on Sunday - the conclusion of their four-game northern road trip.
Glads Notes:
Taking Their Shots: Entering Friday's game, the Gladiators had outshot their opponents in back-to-back games for the first time since January 19th and the 23rd. Since January 31st, opponents have been getting their shots in; in the last ten games, an opponent has been held to fewer than 30 shots three times. Opponents have averaged 34.5 shots per game in that ten-game stretch.
Follow the Leader: Casey Pierro-Zabotel currently leads the Eastern Conference in scoring with 56 points in 47 games played. He is tied for third among all ECHL skaters in points, behind Allen's Chad Costello and Alaska's Brendan Connolly, and tied with Stockton's Jack Combs and Allen's Gary Steffes.
Gladiators Ahoy: Two players currently on the Gladiators roster have been assigned from their AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates- James Melindy and Dyson Stevenson - and nine more - Joel Hanley (POR), Dan O'Donoghue (POR), Louis Domingue (POR), Mike Lee (POR), Jordon Southorn (POR) Greg Carey (POR), Bretton Stamler (HFD), Casey Pierro-Zabotel (NOR), and Joe Stejskal (IAW) - have spent time in the AHL this year.
Milestones: Sean Berkstresser is one point away from his 200th professional point ... Casey Pierro-Zabotel achieved his 200th ECHL assist in last night's game and is five goals from his 100th pro goal ... Geoff Paukovich is one goal away from his 50th as a pro ... Brenden Walker played in his 100th professional game on Sunday, all coming with Gwinnett ... C.J. Chartrain is two games from his 100th pro game ... Art Bidlevskii is one game from his 100th ECHL contest.
Streaks: Casey Pierro-Zabotel has had points in 11 of his last 15 games (9g, 10a) ... Garry Nunn has four goals and five assists in his last 10 games ... Brenden Walker has four goals and seven assists in his last 12 games.
