Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Road Warriors, proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, are proud to announce goaltender Mackenzie Skapski became the sixth former Road Warriors' player to take the ice in the NHL when he debuted for the Rangers on Friday. In addition, the 20-year old made 24 saves on 25 shots and earned the victory in New York's 3-1 win at Buffalo.
A native of Abbotsford, British Columbia, Skapski played one game with the Road Warriors this season and made 29 saves in a 3-0 setback at Orlando on October 19th. In addition, Skapski attended Training Camp in Greenville and saw action in one pre-season contest, where he stopped 24 shots in a 4-3 loss at South Carolina on October 12th.
In his first professional season, Skapski was recalled by New York from AHL Hartford on February 4th in the wake of an upper-body injury to Rangers' netminder Henrick Lundqvist. The 6'3, 191-pound netminder made 24 appearances with Hartford and posted a 12-7-3 record with a 2.38 goals against average and .914 save percentage.
Prior to turning pro, Skapski played parts of four seasons in the Western Hockey League (WHL) with the Kootenay Ice. In 141 career games, he notched a record of 74-52-7 with a 2.81 goals against average and .909 save percentage. Skapski also earned a silver medal at the 2008-09 Western Canadian Bantam Championships and a bronze medal at the 2010-11 U17 World Hockey Challenge.
Skapski was selected in the sixth round (#170 overall) in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by New York. He joins goaltenders Connor Knapp, Nathan Lieuwen and Cam Talbot, as well as defensemen Marc-Andre Bourdon and Julien Brouillette, as former Road Warriors who have progressed to the NHL.
