Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers are proud to announce that Matt Carkner has been named the team's winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Bridgeport community during the 2015-16 season.

Carkner, 35, now has been named IAO/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year six times, winning the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 2006-07. Carkner is the first to volunteer for any community-related events and always makes time for any charitable organizations.

Carkner received the American Special Hockey Association's Inspiration Award earlier this season for his outstanding work with American Special Hockey and specifically the Southern Connecticut Storm Special Hockey Team. Prior to joining the Sound Tigers, Carkner dedicated his time to the Long Island Blues while a member of the New York Islanders.

Carkner is now one of 30 finalists for the AHL's 2015-16 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award , honoring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League at a later date.
