AHL Stockton Heat

Goaltender Nick Schneider Marvelous in Pro Debut But Gulls Foil Heat 4-2

March 31, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Stockton Heat News Release

Stockton, Calif. - 18-year-old rookie goaltender Nick Schneider stole the show Wednesday night at Stockton Arena with his 34-save performance between the pipes for his pro debut with the Stockton Heat, but the San Diego Gulls earn the win over Stockton by a score of 4-2. Schneider got the nod less than a week after being assigned to Stockton by the Calgary Flames and impressed with his calm demeanor and patience with the puck throughout his first start as a pro. Unfortunately, the only offense the Heat could muster came from Oliver Kylington and Drew Shore, as Stockton fell just short of a third period comeback against the Gulls. The Stockton Heat will now prepare for the top-seeded Ontario Reign who come to Stockton Arena Friday night.

QUOTES

"[Turner] Elson made a good play and we were able to isolate one defenseman. He made a nice pass to me low and fortunately I was able to put it past the goalie." - Drew Shore on his goal tonight.

"[Nick Schneider] is a great goalie. He's truly one of the best I've seen at handling the puck behind the net. His ability with the puck really makes it seem like we have an extra defenseman back there. We all were talking about how much we loved having him playing the puck like that. He's young and he has a lot to learn, but he looks good so far." - Turner Elson on goaltender Nick Schneider's performance.

"I was pretty nervous at the start, but the guys were great and encouraged me throughout the game. The whole team went out of their way to give me taps on the pads and stuff like that. It's nice to get the first start out of the way. Hopefully I won't have the nerves next time." - Nick Schneider on making his pro debut tonight.

"After I got the first shot I thought I settled in. The guys told me that as soon as you get that first save out of the way I'd be fine and as the game went on I started to realize it's the same game of hockey I've played my whole life, but there are obviously some pretty exceptional players out there." - Schneider on when he felt himself become more comfortable and lose his nerves.

"Personally it's pretty cool to get my first pro game out of the way. At this point last year I didn't think I'd get this chance when I did, so it is a great feeling." - Schneider on his overall feelings after tonight.

"I thought [Nick Schneider] looked great in net. I think before the game we thought there might be some nerves for him, but from the start of the game he looked in control. He was very steady and he gave us a good game tonight." - Head Coach Ryan Huska on the debut of goaltender Nick Schneider.

"We defended much better tonight against a team that plays with speed. When we were in Ontario last week we gave up a lot of quality chances. Tonight we didn't give up a lot of the grade A chances and a lot of the shots came from the outside." - Coach Huska on the team's play in front of Schneider tonight.
