Carruth's Shutout Snaps Road Skid
March 31, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rockford IceHogs News Release
Chicago, Ill. - In their final trip to Rosemont, the Rockford IceHogs finished off the season series with the Chicago Wolves in style with a 1-0 victory to snap an eight-game winless streak on the road.
Rockford received all the offense they needed late in the third period as Ryan Haggerty notched his fifth goal of the season against Chicago. Goaltender Mac Carruth stopped all 23 shots he faced to earn his second career shutout.
The IceHogs have struggled to find the back of the net during their recent road woes, averaging just 1.88 goals per game over an eight-game winless stretch, but found themselves on the winning end of a low-scoring contest.
During the game's first five minutes, Rockford saw a two-on-one bid stuffed by Wolves netminder Jordan Binnington before breakaways by Chris DeSousa and Tanner Kero were also stopped.
Carruth made an impressive save of his own to keep the game scoreless through the first frame as he stretched to get a pad on Jacob Doty's shot.
The second period was all Rockford as the visitors outshot Chicago 15-6. The Hogs were even able to generate chances shorthanded as Kyle Cumiskey, Kyle Baun, and Jake Dowell nearly combined to give Rockford the lead at the 11:50 mark.
Finally, with 5:58 to play in the game, the IceHogs cashed in on the power play to break the scoreless deadlock. Vince Hinostroza slashed through the Wolves zone before finding Haggerty alone in the slot. Haggerty picked up the pass, waited patiently for a shooting lane to open, and ripped a shot past Binnington. The goal was his eighth of the season and fifth against the Wolves.
Carruth held strong the rest of the way to keep Chicago off the board and improve his season mark to 2-3-1. The shutout marked the second time Carruth blanked the Wolves at Allstate Arena with the previous perfect performance coming on Nov. 23, 2014.
Rockford finished 1-for-5 on the power play while stopping Chicago on all three of their chances on the man advantage.
Next Home Game: Friday, Apr. 1 vs. San Antonio Rampage at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. for a Blues Flame Friday. Fans 21-and-older are invited to enjoy live blues music, a happy hour special, and free appetizers at the Blue Flame Lounge on the main concourse.
