Mason Williams Claims SAL Pow Honors

CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston RiverDogs centerfielder Mason Williams was named the South Atlantic League Player of the Week on Monday for the week of June 18-24. In four games during the past week, Williams hit .421 with five extra base hits, including three homers, six RBIs and seven runs scored.

He began the week and Charleston's second half of the season on Thursday with a lead-off home run on June 21 against Greenville at Fluor Field. On Saturday, he again began the game with a bomb and also slapped a triple as part of a 2-for-5 performance with 3 RBI. He finished the week on Sunday with three hits in four at-bats, including another dinger, a double and drove home two runs.

Williams is a native of Winter Garden, Florida and was drafted by the Yankees in the fourth round of the 2010 draft out of West Orange High. A left-handed hitter who is 6'1, 180 lbs, the 20-year-old outfielder joins right fielder Tyler Austin, second baseman Angelo Gumbs and catcher Gary Sanchez, who received the honor twice this season. Austin was cited for games player April 5-15, and Gumbs received it for games played May 7-13. Sanchez was first named player of the week for May 28-June 3 and again for the period of June 11-17.
