'Dads Take 1st Place with 6-2 Win in Kannapolis

KANNAPOLIS, NC - The Hickory Crawdads seized early control of first place in the Northern Division Second-Half Standings, topping the Kannapolis Intimidators, 6-2, before 681 fans at CMC-Northeast Stadium in Kannapolis on Monday night .

The 'Dads (4-1, 40-34) extended the top of the first inning with a two-out rally to take the early lead against RHP Chris Devenski (L, 4-2). With two away and the bases clear, SS Rougned Odor belted the first pitch of his at-bat over the right-field wall for the solo shot. LF Jeremy Williams followed with a single up the middle, and promptly raced home on an RBI triple by 3B Drew Robinson, doubling the early lead to 2-0.

Hickory All-Star LHP Victor Payano (W, 5-3) kept the 'Dads lead intact through his five scoreless innings of work. Payano scattered just three hits, while striking out four in the outing.

After the Intimidators (3-1, 36-38) got on the board in the bottom of the sixth against RHP Arlett Mavare, Hickory opened the gap with a big blast in the top of the seventh. CF Jordan Akins doubled to start the inning and then 1B Jhonny Gomez joined him on the bases with a single. All-Star RF Chris Grayson drove everyone in with a towering three-run homer to right field, stretching the Hickory lead to 5-1.

The Crawdads added one more insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Williams singled to start the stanza and quickly swiped second base. One out later, 2B Alejandro Selen ripped an RBI double inside the third-base line, plating Williams for the 6-1 advantage.

Kannapolis attempted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth, plating a run against RHP Chance Sossamon. Sossamon, though, navigated out of a bases-loaded jam with only the one run coming in by inducing an inning-ending double play. Sossamon then dealt a scoreless ninth, ended by the fourth double play turned by the Crawdads in the game, sealing the 6-2 win for Hickory.
