Lexington Legends News Release

The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game, and then scored four in the bottom of the 13th to win 12-11 over the Lexington Legends Monday night. The teams combined for 41 hits, 23 by the Grasshoppers, who left 18 runners on base. The Legends took a 7-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning before Greensboro rallied.

The Legends took the lead in the second inning when Jay Austin singled, stole second and third, and scored on a single by Chan Jong Moon. Greensboro evened the score in the bottom of the second on a double by Ryan Rieger and a single by James Wooster.

In the third, Delino DeShields Jr. walked, stole second and third, and came home on a throwing error by catcher Austin Barnes. Brandon Meredith hit a solo home run in the fourth to make the score 3-1, and the Legends added another run in that inning on a double by Roberto Pena and a single by Jose Fernandez, who had five hits in the game.

Greensboro got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out triple by Rand Smith and a single by Ryan Goetz.

Meredith added another solo homer in the sixth, his fourth home run in his last five games. The Legends made it 7-2 with two runs in the seventh inning on a double by Fernandez, a bunt single by DeShields and an infield hit by Jordan Scott on which Fernandez scored. DeShields came home when third baseman Josh Adams threw the ball past first base for an error after fielding Scott's grounder.

Greensboro began its comeback when Rieger hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. They cut the lead to 7-5 in the eighth on a walk to Goetz and a double by Aaron Senne.

Fernandez homered to right field in the top of the ninth, giving Lexington an 8-5 lead.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Wooster drew a walk from Lexington reliever Dayan Diaz. Ryan McIntyre tripled, scoring Wooster to cut the lead to 8-6. Murilo Gouvea replaced Diaz, and then hit Terrence Dayleg with a pitch and walked Rand Smith to load the bases. After Goetz was called out on strikes for the second out, Barnes hit a line drive to third baseman Moon, who knocked the ball down, but threw over the head of first baseman Zach Johnson for an error, and two runs scored to tie the game at 8-8.

The score remained 8-8 until the top of the 13th, when Pena led off with a double, moved to third on Moon's sacrifice and scored on Fernandez' fifth hit of the game, a double to left center field. DeShields followed with his fifth home run of the year and second in two days, giving the Legends an 11-8 lead.

After McIntyre struck out leading off the bottom of the 13th, Dayleg walked and Smith and Goetz both singled, loading the bases. Evan Grills relieved Gabriel Garcia for Lexington, but Barnes doubled for his fifth hit of the game, scoring Dayleg and Smith and sending Goetz to third. Senne's single scored Smith with the tying run, and Josh Adams lined a single to right to bring Barnes home with the winning run.

Lexington starter Mike Foltynewicz, who was looking for his South Atlantic League-leading 10th victory, allowed 12 hits but only two runs through the first six innings.

Chris Shafer (1-1) who had given up the three runs in the top of the 13th, got the win. Grills (2-1) took the loss.

The 18 hits in the game by the Legends were a season high.

The two teams will meet Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game series. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
