March 15, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Toronto Marlies News Release
Mike Penny, general manager of the Toronto Marlies, announced today that the club has signed former University of Vermont Catamounts Jeff Corey and Jaime Sifers to amateur tryout contracts. As per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Corey, 23, registered 99 points (47 goals, 52 assists) while collecting 134 penalty minutes in 135 career NCAA games with Vermont over a four-year playing career. The 6'0, 190-pound right wing enjoyed his best season while playing in 37 of 39 games for the Catamounts in 2004-05 when he finished second in regular season team-scoring by setting collegiate career highs in goals (17), assists (16) and points (33). Corey is a native of Boothwyn, Pennsylvania.
Sifers, 22, registered 80 points (15 goals, 65 assists) while collecting 266 penalty minutes in 143 career NCAA games with Vermont over a four-year playing career. The 5'11, 210-pound defenceman has recorded three separate seasons of 18 points and was first among defenceman in scoring (sixth overall in team-scoring) while playing in all 38 games for the Catamounts this past season. Sifers is a native of Stratford, Connecticut.
The Marlies have also set their Clear Day roster. The list is comprised of two goalies and 20 skaters and represents Toronto players who are eligible to compete in all remaining regular-season and AHL playoff contests. Additional players can be activated only in case of injury, suspension or player recall. Under AHL by-law teams are permitted to sign junior or collegiate players to amateur tryout deals (see above) only after their respective seasons are complete. The Catamounts were swept out of Hockey East Playoffs last Friday evening when they were defeated 6-2 by Boston College.
The Marlies Clear Day roster consists of goaltenders Jean-Sebastien Aubin and Jean-Francois Racine; defencemen Brendan Bell, Brad Brown, Jay Harrison, Staffan Kronwall, Marc Moro and Ian White; and forwards Bates Battaglia, Tyler Beechey, Brett Engelhardt, Mike Hoffman, Roman Kukumberg, Brad Leeb, John Mitchell, Colin Murphy, Kris Newbury, Ben Ondrus, John Pohl, Martin Sagat, Alexander Suglobov and Jeremy Williams.
The Marlies return to action this evening when they host the Hamilton Bulldogs - AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens - at Ricoh Coliseum at 7:30 p.m.
