Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Senators moved ahead of the Philadelphia Phantoms into fifth place in the East Division of the American Hockey League with a 3-2 shootout win against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.

It only took Binghamton two minutes and 30 seconds to get on the board first when forward Joe Cullen picked up his sixth goal of the season. Forward Bobby Robins, who recently finished a four-year college career at UMass-Lowell and was signed by Binghamton on Monday, picked up an assist on his first professional shift. Also assisting on the goal was defenseman Jan Platil.

But the Penguins captured the next two goals as Krystofer Kolanos and Jonathan Filewich gave Wilkes-Barre a 2-1 lead at first intermission.

After a scoreless second period, Jeff Heerema tied the game with his 19th goal of the season only 37 seconds into the final period. His goal was assisted by Charlie Stephens and Tomas Malec.

Binghamton then outshot the Penguins five to one in the bonus period, but could not get any shots past Pens goalie Andy Chiodo before time expired.

In the shootout, Charlie Stephens and Jeff Heerema scored on Binghamton's first two shots and Kelly Guard stopped all four Wilkes-Barre shooters. Guard earned the game's first star after stopping 32 of 34 shots in regulation to keep Binghamton in the game.

Neither team scored a power-play goal with Wilkes-Barre squandering eight chances and Binghamton going scoreless in four tries.

The Senators return to action at the Arena on Friday night as the Hershey Bears visit town. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and tickets are still available by calling (607) 722-SENS.
