Connecticut Whale News Release
Toronto, ONT: Kris Newbury scored two goals and added an assist and defenseman Jamie Sifers, a Stratford, CT native chipped in a goal and an assist, to lead the Toronto Marlies to a 4-1 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack Saturday night at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto.
The loss was the Wolf Pack's second consecutive defeat, and dropped their record to 1-3-0-0 on the season.
Toronto opened the scoring only 59 seconds into the first period, as Sifers wristed a shot through from the right point. The long shot beat a screened Matt Zaba, making his first AHL appearance for the Wolf Pack. Mark Bell and Tim Stapleton assisted.
Mike Ouellette tied the score for Hartford at 3:21 of the second period, converting a feed from Dale Weise. Carrying the puck down right wing, Weise banked the puck off of the side of the goal, causing it to carom into the goal crease. Ouellette, coming down the slot, poked it past Toronto netminder Justin Pogge. The goal was Ouellette's first point of the season and ended a run of six scoreless periods for the Wolf Pack. Weise and Justin Soryal both got their first pro points with the assists.
Toronto regained the lead at 14:28, shortly after completing a penalty kill. Alex Foster stole the puck near the Marlie blueline and led a break into the Wolf Pack zone. Newbury, coming out of the penalty box, joined the rush and ripped a drop pass from Foster past Zaba.
Staffan Kronwall upped Toronto's lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal at 4:11 of the third frame. He beat Zaba from the top of the circles with a perfectly-placed slapshot to the glove side. Newbury created the final margin with a shorthanded, empty-net goal with 12 seconds remaining.
The Wolf Pack had a 31-21 shots on goal advantage in the game. Pogge made 30 saves in the win for Toronto, which got its first victory in three games on the season (1-1-0-1), and Zaba made 17 stops.
Hartford is next in action Wednesday night, when the Wolf Pack travel to Worcester to take on the Sharks (7:05).
